From Ken: It started as a hobby in 1980. I would buy a old piano that needed work as cheap as I could, and refinish it, then restore it. I thought I could purchase old pianos and just make them play without refinishing them. Boy, was I wrong! The wood that they used to make them from was so wonderful, I couldn't help but refinish them. Many times I spent more time refinishing them than I did repairing them. People finally heard there was some fellow doing this kind of work that hadn't died yet and the calls started coming in. Since 1980 I have been restoring old pianos, player pianos, nickelodeons, reproducing pianos, uprights and grands, installing pianomation systems, piano disc systems, and just about everything else that has keys in it.
To have any of the following services performed on your piano, please e-mail info@kenspianoservice.com for a free quotation.
PianoDisc Installation: A system that, when installed in your piano, plays like the artist is sitting there playing it in your home. Each key has a solenoid under it. When the music is played it tells the piano what key to play, how hard to play it,and how long to hold it. PianoDisc has a computer on board that holds libraries of music - classical, jazz, ragtime, etc. Every once in a while they will have an improvement; all the service man has to do is update it with the new information.
PianoMation Installation: This is a very fine system that is similar to pianodisc. This is a work horse system that is very easy to operate. Slip in a QRS CD and let the good times roll. These CD's can be put in a juke box like in a night club and you can dance all night to live music.
Tuning: Local area only. Pianos always get tuned before they leave the shop. Ones that have been restrung are tuned a minimum of five times.
Restringing: This is required for a number of reasons: When the tuning pins are loose and the piano will no longer hold a tune. Or when the strings have become rusty and break when brought up to pitch. Also, any time a major restoration is done and the sound board is being repaired. This last one is especially important on a grand piano: when the bridges are loose or cracked. These are only a few of the many reasons that a piano may require restringing.
Refinishing: A piano is stripped of its old finish, repaired, sanded, and a new finish is applied.
